July 22 – A God Who Speaks

Glacier

Becky and I will be leaving town as the DNC arrives in town. When we made our reservations for the trip to Montana, we were not thinking that we’d be missing all those Democrats.

We leave very early on Monday morning, and with a stop at O’Hare in Chicago we ought to be in Bozeman, Montana, before noon.  Then a five hour drive to Whitefish near the entrance to Glacier National Park, where we plan to spend a few days hiking and taking in the beauty and wonder of God’s creation in that amazing place. At the end of the week we will head back to Billings, a seven hour drive (Montana is a big state), for some time with two of Becky’s brothers who live there.

By the time we are back in Philadelphia, the Democrats will have left town. We didn’t plan it that way, but we’re okay with it.

Hiking, relaxing, enjoying each other’s company. The big sky and the tall mountains. I hope to hear from God. It’s not that I have an agenda, a particular question for which I would like to know God’s answer. I just want to hear from God. I think I will.

God will speak to me next week through his Word. I plan on beginning each day of our vacation with the readings from the Daily Office and maybe an Oswald Chambers devotional.

As we enjoy our time in Glacier National Park, God’s word may speak again. Perhaps from Psalm 95: In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also. Or maybe Psalm 90: Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. And, it being Glacier Park, I am kind of hoping to be reminded of Psalm 104: The high mountains are for the wild goats; the rocks are a refuge for the rock badgers.

We plan on long quiet evenings, and perhaps sitting outside on one of those cool Montana nights the Word will remind us that the heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork (Psalm 19).

Montana is a big state and even after seven hours in the car driving from Whitefish to Billings, there’s still a lot of Montana to go before I-90 crosses into North Dakota. Billings is as far as we will go.

Becky and I don’t mind long motor trips at all. We enjoy the scenery and quiet. Mostly we enjoy the time together, just the two of us. I think God’s Word may speak to me somewhere along the way to Billings. Proverbs 31, An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels.

I am pretty sure I will hear from God when we’re in Montana next week. Amazingly, if I am willing to open his Word day by day, he always speaks. If my ears are open, I am always granted the privilege of hearing from him. But with a big sky above, tall mountains ahead, the Milky Way at night, and time together with my life’s best companion, I’m especially eager to hear from God next week.

Give my best to the Democrats.

See you Sunday as we worship the God who speaks.
